Check out the trailer below.
Piracy has become a major headache to film producers lately. The latest movie to fall for piracy is Dhanush’s starrer Jagame Thandhiram. The movie is a gangster drama is directed by Karthik Subbaraj.
Jagame Thandhiram was initially scheduled for theatrical release, but due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the makers decided to release the movie on Netflix on 16th June 2021. However, just hours before the release, the movie has been released in HD quality for free download online.
Online movie/web series leaks have become a major issue for the makers, as it affects their earnings. Jagame Thandhiram has become the latest target of piracy sites such including Tamilrockers, Telegram, and other illegal websites.
This is not the first time that a film or a show has been leaked just ahead of its release. Earlier, The Family Man 2, Mumbai Saga, AK vs AK had became the target of online piracy.
India is one of the largest markets for online piracy, as many people illegally download Indian movies for free. hence, the producers are losing up to 30% of their annual revenue to piracy.
Telegram was set to become a famous messaging app name when it launched in 2013, but after losing first place to WhatsApp it has become a favorite of some of the more niche online users. The app says it is the most private solution for instant messaging, hence making it a popular choice for sharing pirated content.
Books, magazines, movies, shows and comic books are all being shared on the platform. You can upload a file that is over 1.5GB in size (which can be a two-hour complete movie), without a limit to any number of files. Hence, making it an ample app for online piracy.
Started in 2011, Tamilrockers is a website that allows users to download pirated movies. New Bollywood, Hollywood Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Punjabi etc movies can be found here that gets leaked as soon as the movie releases. With the growing popularity of new movies and web series OTT platforms, Tamilrockers has become a hugely popular website for the pirated content.
As piracy is illegal in India, the Indian government has banned Tamilrockers, but still, the website remains operational as it regularly changes its domain name extension. In 2018, three people linked to Tamilrockers were arrested. Also, in 2019, more Tamilrockers members were arrested in Coimbatore.
Tamilrocker’s illegal movie downloads hurt the revenues of the film industry very badly, as the creators of the content do not get full reward for their hard work as users of these websites do not visit the theatres to watch the movies that are available freely on Tamilrockers.
The Government of India has finalized punishment for the same. As per the Cinematograph Act of 2019, if any individual is found recording a film without the written consent of the producers, he or she can face a jail term of up to 3 years and slapped with a fine of Rs 10 lakhs.
People circulating pirated copies on illegal torrent websites can also face a jail term.
